Open Enrollment Period Begins November 1st

With quite a few changes happening in the health insurance world, some people may be thinking that there is no more Open Enrollment Period that you have to enroll in a health insurance plan. Although there have been changes to the Affordable Health Care Act, the Open Enrollment Period has not been thrown out the window.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Little-known regulation under the ACA allows Operators to enroll in a group health plan without participation or contribution requirements

A little-known requirement under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires health insurance carriers to offer an annual one-month special open enrollment period (from November 15 – December 15) to employers in the small group market who do not meet the employee minimum participation or employer minimum contribution requirements.

Last year 19 Operators enrolled in a group health plan through the Special Enrollment Period.

SEP Advantages

  • Employers that cannot afford to have their employees participate may find the SEP a viable option. There is no employer contribution requirement.
  • Beneficial for employers in which management wants to participate in an employer-based healthcare plan but employees cannot afford or do not want to participate.
